Brethren
I hope everyone had a good week. I can’t believe how fast this year has gone by. I was reminded by my wife today that Christmas is in 10 days…
Last week I wasn’t able to be there but the feedback I got was Bro McCoy taught a great lesson. I heard he is not a Mary Poppins fan but that’s okay. She’s more for the deep thinkers. Here is a portion of the talk he used from Elder Renlund that really struck home to me…
Our Heavenly Father wants to help and bless us, but we do not always let Him. Sometimes, we even act as if we already know everything. And we too need to do “the next bit” on our own. That is why we came to earth from a premortal, heavenly home. Our “bit” involves making choices.
Our Heavenly Father’s goal in parenting is not to have His children do what is right; it is to have His children choose to do what is right and ultimately become like Him. If He simply wanted us to be obedient, He would use immediate rewards and punishments to influence our behaviors.
I like this perspective. Sometimes it is hard not to just go through the motions. I catch myself doing things because this is something I have to do or because it’s what I’m supposed to do not necessarily what I want to do. Even with that when I’m done I usually feel good about what I did and happy that I did it. The alternative though when I go into it with the attitude and mindset of this is what I want to do, and this is what I choose to do, the entire experience is gratifying and rewarding. That could be because during the activity I’m not wishing I was somewhere else but now reading what Elder Renlund said it’s probably because Heavenly Father is happy with me choosing to do what he asks and therefore I feel his love and appreciation.
This Sunday Bro Larsen will be using the talk “ The Vision of the Redemption of the Dead” given by Elder Ballard. https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2018/10/the-vision-of-the-redemption-of-the-dead?lang=eng
