Weekly Note: Nov. 18, 2020

 Brethren

I hope you are all doing well and the COVID fatigue isn't making you go crazy!! I can only speak for myself but I have definitely had enough. It's weird because so far at least for me it's all mental. My life is pretty much the same except for a few more things I have to do when I go places but the mental side is brutal.... My weak mind can't handle it 😊

We are working on a service activity to help Brother Howell set up his Christmas lights. This will happen sometime in the next two weeks. I will let everyone know when we get a day and time nailed down.

We are also working with the Relief Society on delivering some key chains to those we minister to. These key chains were made by Saints in Guatemala and sent to us to build bonds of love and unity. We will be in touch on this as more information comes out.

I had a meeting with the Stake Presidency last week. A couple of things that came out of that meeting is their concern for attendance in Zoom meetings and help for the missionaries. Brethren, it's a difficult time. Zoom meetings are extra hard for some of us. I know because I am one of those people. But as in all things right now we just have to do our best and deal with some things we don't necessarily like. Please do what you can! On the missionary front if you have any yard work or service work they can do outside for you or a neighbor please let me know. Also if you would be willing to let them teach your family over a Zoom call let me or them know. I know they would be most grateful for anything we can do to help. It is an extremely tough time to be a missionary right now.

This Sunday we will have an Elders Quorum Zoom meeting at 1 pm. At the bottom of the page is the login information for the meeting. Brother Glenn has graciously accepted the invitation to teach. He will be using the talk "Sustainable Societies" given by Elder Christofferson  https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2020/10/22christofferson?lang=eng. This was one of my favorite conference talks because of how it speaks to ways we can come together and build a society of peace and happiness. I mean c'mon... who wouldn't want that! Especially right now!! Part of my COVID fatigue comes from the disregard of human decency. Even within family and friendship groups. Bishop Burton and I were talking about this very thing just a couple of days ago. I was marveling at how he can be so patient and kind to people that are so rude to him. He just said he tries to keep things in perspective and really try to listen and understand where they are coming from. I told him it's the reason why he is Bishop. I would maybe not be so patient...lol. But it's true!! In our home church this past Sunday my family had a great discussion on being able to be kind and positive. Look for the good in people and in the world. Try to build things up instead of tear down. Try to see other people's perspectives and find common ground. You don't have to agree on everything and you probably won't but we have to be able to respect each other as human beings. I don't believe Christ agreed with everyone he met. In fact, we know he did not, but he loved them. His purpose was a higher one. He worried more about their spiritual wellbeing. He taught us how to treat each other. All we have to do is learn about him. There's not a better thing we can be doing right now than reading, talking, thinking, and praying about who he is, what he wants for us, and how we can achieve those things. Now is the time to do that brethren!! Here is a small portion of Elder Christofferson's talk. Please read the talk and attend the Zoom meeting on Sunday. I know it's not the best but right now it is what we have.

Reflecting on this and other examples of once flourishing societies that later foundered, I think it safe to say that when people turn from a sense of accountability to God and begin to trust instead in the “arm of flesh,” disaster lurks. Trusting in the arm of flesh is to ignore the divine Author of human rights and human dignity and to give the highest priority to riches, power, and the praise of the world (while often mocking and persecuting those who follow a different standard). Meanwhile, those in sustainable societies are seeking, as King Benjamin said, to “grow in the knowledge of the glory of him that created [them], or in the knowledge of that which is just and true.”10

The institutions of family and religion have been crucial for endowing both individuals and communities with the virtues that sustain an enduring society. These virtues, rooted in scripture, include integrity, responsibility and accountability, compassion, marriage and fidelity in marriage, respect for others and the property of others, service, and the necessity and dignity of work, among others.

Thanks for all you do Brethren! It's not an easy time and definitely feels like God is separating the wheat from the chaff... Please be the wheat!

Let me know if there is anything at all I can do for you. I am more than happy to chat on the phone, come visit, or whatever you are comfortable with. Please reach out to those you minister to. Let them know we love them and are here to help.

Note: Just because we have 12 months' worth of Zoom meetings listed does not mean we will be doing this for 12 months. I hope and believe we will be back to meeting in person before then.
